✓ Have higher support needs requiring assistance throughout the day or night
✓ Want to live with greater independence in a shared or individual home

✓ Have SIL funding included in their NDIS plan (following a Home and Living Assessment)

✓ Want to transition from family home or institutional care to independent living
SIL Accommodation Options
Shared SIL Housing
Live with other NDIS participants who share similar support needs, interests, and lifestyles. Support costs are shared, and participants benefit from peer companionship and social connection.
Individual SIL Housing
Receive SIL support in your own home (rented or owned). Support workers provide assistance tailored specifically to your needs and schedule.
Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA)
SIL can be provided in SDA housing—purpose-built, accessible homes designed for people with extreme functional impairment or very high support needs. (SDA funding is separate from SIL funding.)
How SIL Funding Works
SIL funding is determined through an NDIS Home and Living Assessment, which considers:
- Your current and future support needs
- Your goals for independent living
- The level of assistance required (intensity and frequency)
- Whether support will be shared with other participants
Important: SIL funding covers the cost of support staff and assistance—but not accommodation itself. Housing costs may be covered separately through:
- Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) funding
- Private rental (using your income or Disability Support Pension)
- Social housing or community housing providers
How It Works
Step 1: Home and Living Assessment
If you don’t already have SIL funding, work with your Support Coordinator or LAC to request a Home and Living Assessment during your NDIS plan review.
Step 2: SIL Planning & Consultation
We meet with you (and your family/advocates) to understand your goals, preferences, support needs, lifestyle, and what “home” means to you.
Step 3: Accommodation & Housemate Matching (if applicable)
If you’re joining shared SIL housing, we work to find compatible housemates who share similar interests, routines, and support needs.
Step 4: Support Team Development
We build a dedicated support team trained in your specific needs, preferences, and goals—ensuring consistency and trust.
Step 5: Moving In & Transition Support
We provide extra support during your transition to SIL, helping you settle in, establish routines, and feel comfortable in your new home.
Step 6: Ongoing Support & Reviews
Your support team provides daily assistance, and we regularly review your plan to ensure it’s working well and helping you achieve your goals.
